Asphalt Milling

Cold planing to remove the top layers of asphalt for resurfacing or correction.

What This Covers

Milling, also called cold planing or rotomilling, removes the top layer or layers of an existing pavement with a milling machine. It is specified when roughly the top two inches need replacing, rather than a full depth rebuild.

It serves three purposes: preparing a surface for an overlay, removing damaged material, and correcting surface irregularities so the finished grade drains where it should. Because milling removes material rather than adding it, it also keeps the finished surface at its original elevation, which matters at kerbs, thresholds and drainage structures.

The ground material is loaded and transported for recycling as reclaimed asphalt pavement, which becomes a component in new asphalt mixes.
